The briefing room was still. Twelve members of Salvo Team Four sat patiently. For the first time, Axel noticed the team was comprised of more females than males. They wore the shoulder insignia of a red four-leaf clover against a blue background accented with white stars. His sharp eyes scanned their name tags. He didn’t recognize any of them. However, it looked like Gardner’s executive order to split Salvo into multiple operational teams, similar to the old SEAL teams, had gone into effect.

Axel outlined the overarching details of the mission before pointing to a large 3D image of the Deep 10 facility on the briefing room’s wall monitor. “This is probably where we’ll be the most vulnerable, the elevators down. We’ll be using one that’s currently disabled.”

“How’s that going to work?” asked Lieutenant Bland. The rough-faced team leader had a barroom brawler’s frame and gray peppering his short brown hair.

“We’ve got the codes to silently activate the elevator,” said Axel. “It won’t appear on their security system so we should be able to slip down and up without anyone else knowing. There’s a Celledon recovery team on site, and they’re using the main service elevators to move heavy equipment in place for industrial clean up.

“Yes,” Axel continued, “there are unfriendlies in the AO, possibly armed Celledon security forces. However, that’s just an educated guess. Our objective is the administrative offices in the rear, through this access corridor. We’ll be cracking their main corporate computer node, extracting the necessary data, and exfiltrating back to the surface.

“The Hendrix will be running orbital cover, in the event that the Gambler’s cover is blown at the surface station. There’s a lot of traffic around the site, so the hope is the Gambler’s signal as a private contractor craft will hold up. If it doesn’t, we’ll need a secondary shuttle to retrieve us, escorted by the 21st Special Operations fighters.

“Not going to lie, people, this could get messy. This facility recently experienced an ‘incident,’ and given the use of chemicals and Celledon’s nature for testing weapons on their own people, we’ll be going in in full chem/bio suits. Lieutenant Bland told me the new gear has the cloaking weave built in. So, we’ll be pretty hard to see.” Axel caught a few sneers with that last comment. No one liked using those things. “We’ll be going without the aid of drones. There’s just too many unknowns to use them. Plus, we won’t have time to sit and look at their feeds as we’re moving through the facility. Speed is the key here. Are there any other questions?”

No hands went up.

“Right, then. Let’s get suited up. We deploy in one hour. Lieutenant Bland, could you stay behind?”

The room cleared and Axel was alone with Bland.

“What did operations command tell you about this mission?” Axel asked.

“Support you in any way we can, sir. Unknown environment, unknown hostiles. Another day at the office.”

“I’m going to tell you this now, so there are no surprises. We’re gathering intel on the location of Vice President Callahan.
